The Super Colon is HERE!
Learn About Colorectal Cancer Prevention at Discovery Gateway

May 28, 2008

The Super Colon is HERE! This 8-foot tall, 20-foot long replica of a human colon will be in Salt Lake City May 28-30, 2008 at the Discovery Gateway. The exhibit is free to the public and will be open from noon to 9:00 p.m. each day.

Coloncancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in Utah and the nation for both men and women. By the end of 2008, the American Cancer Society estimates that 750 Utahns will be diagnosed with colon cancer and 240 will die from it.

“The good news is that most of time this disease is preventable with regular screening,” said Kalynn Filion of the UDOH Cancer Program.

This bright, engaging exhibit allows adults and children to get a close-up look at healthy tissue, tissue with non-malignant colorectal disease, as well as tissue with various stages of colorectal cancer.

“Walking through the exhibit was an experience I’ll never forget,” said Filion. “Colon cancer is a terrible disease but we absolutely can prevent it.”

By walking through the inflatable replica, visitors learn about the risks, symptoms, prevention, early detection of, and treatment options for, colorectal cancer. The Huntsman Cancer Institute, the Utah Department of Health, the Utah Cancer Action Network, and Discovery Gateway invite adults and children to come and explore this replica of a human colon.
